The Pittsburgh Business Times is reporting that Trader Joe's will be coming to Pittsburgh in the fall.
"All I can confirm is that we are coming to Pittsburgh," said Alison Mochizuki, a company spokeswoman. "It seems like a great place for Trader Joe's to be. There's a lot of foodies there. What's not to like?"
However, she wouldn't divulge where the store will be located or whether the company's plans include multiple Pittsburgh locations.
Interesting tidbit from the story: "...and often generates sales of more than $1,000 per square foot -- a figure double that of conventional supermarkets, according to published reports."
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports this will be located in the neighborhood of E. Liberty in the former Wheeler Paint Co. building as part of an adaptive reuse mixed-use project.

Yea. This is long overdue and a welcome addition to the 'burg.
On my travels, I have the opportunity to not only shop TJ's but also SuperFresh and Food Emporium. I really love the selection and variety of these stores.
When this store opens, it will be chaotic, alot like when IKEA opened years ago. So be prepared and enjoy. But sorry, you won't be able to purchase Two Buck Chuck wines there.

Hallelujah!! We moved from the Bay Area to the 'Burgh 13 years ago and have been seeking out Trader Joe's everywhere we travel.
My friends think I'm nuts, but when TJs is here, they'll understand
why it's so popular.
How about one in another part of the area??

I travel to Chicago from Pgh at least twice a year. I NEVER fail to make a side trip to Trader Joe's before I come home. I'm addicted to the place. I will be a regular customer when it FINALLY comes to the burgh. Hopefully more locations will open here. East liberty is in the city and not near any limited access roads. It will be a real pain in the butt traffic wise. How about one in the suburbs?

I have been a Trader Joe's addict since I first visited one in Virginia when my boyfriend lived there. I was totally ecstatic w/the prices, the types of seafood products, & other items that are imported. I especially got happy when I found my Spiced Chai tea decaffeinated for $2.99/can!!! Only problem was, private vendors for TJ's & they won't let you order from them & have it shipped to you. So, I am totally thrilled to have my TJ's coming close to home. Yippee! Spiced Chai tea inexpensive 4 once!

Me and my wife travel to the Cleveland TJ quite often, so we are really happy to have a local store. We would love to have a TJ also in the North suburbs. It is the residential area with most growth now and I think TJ is missing a great bussiness opportunity by not oppening a second store north of the city.

I'm really glad TJs is moving to the Wheeler Paint building. It's great to see them reuse that building as well as show their preference to the more sustainable lifestyle of living IN the city and not in the burbs. Hooray for city living! Can't wait to ride my bike there...

It's more than just official, they've finally put up a sign on the old Wheeler Paint/Post Office building, "Trader Joes coming soon".
Can't wait!!!

Please, please consider opening a Trader Joes in the Carnegie area of Pittsburgh!! There are no decent natural grocery stores in this area!

Now there are three "coming soon signs" and "Pittsburg" is on the coming soon section of the TJ website. Yes, they misspelled Pittsburgh. This poor city gets no respect.

For those who care, I spoke to the manager of the new TJs opening in the Wheeler Paint building.
They're now hiring and expect to open by the end of the month. Yooohooo!

i live in the east end so maybe i shouldn't be complaining, but the number of big natural foods stores within at most 5 square miles in the east end: soon to be 3. the number of big natural foods stores everywhere else in the city: 0.
i know it makes good business sense to move your business where other similar businesses have been successful, but geez! aren't there people who want to buy organic whatever in the north side or whatever?

Two words: college students.
Also, don't forget about the upscale Shadysiders and Squirrel Hillians. But yeah, there need to be some grocery stores Downtown and near the Hill.

Trader Joes (in East Liberty in the Wheeler Paint building) will be opening on friday the 27th only a few days away! Depending on how sales go they seem to be interested in opening at least 2 more TJ's in the Pittsburgh + suburbs area. I personally shop at the giant eagle market district/whole foods/east end food co-op and this store may cancel out my need to visit so many stores to get what I need. I live in the city and appreciate the fact that the first location isn't in some far away suburb that will be complicated for people to access via public transportation, bikes, or short car rides. Let's not put everything we need in some far off strip mall in Robinson or Monroeville.

Finally, no more trips to Cleveland for affordable wild rice, cous-cous, and maple syrup! I hope TJ's gives Whole Paycheck and Giant Gouger a real run for their money. Too long has there been a corner in the natural food market in Pittsburgh. No more! A little late, but what can one say about a city that's on the cutting edge of 15 years ago?
