First post in a while, eh? Glad you dig our flowers....

Mike K

Yeah, I got seriously overworked late last year and then my other blog went nuts (60k visitors this past weekend alone on HackingNetflix.com).

I'm back and you'll see a lot more activity here.

I shop at my local store 2-3 times per week, and I'm still very interested in writing about Trader Joe's.

JC

So I gotta ask... which is your local store?

Alison Hendon

News on the NYC Trader Joe's - it's now listed on their website as Coming Soon!!!

Anon

Glad to see you back! I work at a trader joes and consider it my new career-- very interesting to read your insights on the business. Keep it up!

anon

So I gotta ask...when is TJ's going public so that their customers can support them every way possible?

Alison

Curbed.com just announced an opening date for the Manhattan Trader Joe's - March 17!!!

I just want to say that I miss the Spicy Thai Peanut Dipping Sauce. I loved that stuff. I mean, I really loved it. You're right, I wish there had been some warning. I also wish I knew who made it so that I could find it again because it was just amazing.

sarah

i love trader joe's! i am lucky - where i live there are two within a 1/2 mile radius of my house! i like their tulips, and i've been buying flowers from them weekly for the past month or so.

Rainbow roses... where did they come from? If that picture is what they looked like after you got them home, they obviously were shipped from a long way, they look half-dead already. (You think I'm negative?!? Auwe!!! I'm just not as naive as you, who are pretending you don't work for Trader Joes. yeah. right.) If the roses came from OUTSIDE the USA, you cannot use the petals for such things as rose petal jam or even 'safe' rose water. Why not? Because in other areas of the world, it is still 'okay' to spray flowers with deadly insect sprays, and in other situations, such as CHILE, they still USE DDT, which WE outlawed, when? 30 40 50 years ago? DDT kills birds, by softening their eggshells so they crack when the nesting bird sits on them. I was raised on an organic farm in Canada's Niagara Peninsula in the 40s-50s and factually our farm was the only one that had BIRDS, nesting/singing/eating insects in our orchards. Don't buy ANYTHING from Trader Joes that comes from Chile such as blueberries or even farm-raised salmon (there's an oxymoron!) Trader Joes is JUST ANOTHER grocery chain. Don't buy into their hype. Do you remember that bumpersticker from the 70s? QUESTION AUTHORITY. Don't even believe ME. DO your HOMEWORK FOLKS. DDT. CHILE. HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS too.

Sarah, sorry that you have such a negative attitude toward Trader Joe's. The roses looks great to me. Federal Food Administration will not allow foods with DDT come into the US.

Allen

War17,

"Federal Food Administration will not allow foods with DDT come into the US."

The best-case of what you present is that YOU are not eating DDT.

Works for you. Some people have a concern for the environment outside their own skin.

Allen

D'oh! And it is bad info. DDT IS BANNED IN CHILE. Why do people spread these horrible rumors?

"In Chile, the use of DDT and its. derivatives has been banned only since 1984 ..."

Google it yourself "DDT Banned Chile 1984"

You want to watch products from there because of the LATE DATE they finally got around to it . DDT stays in things for a long, long time.

Environmentalist

Regaring the food from Chili, FDA does not do the job of prohibiting the food with DDT imported to US. They should be. But with tomato and spinach scares, you have seen what the goverment does. Poor job. There are many countries that still use DDT. We need to inform ourselves. Trader Joe may provide better food options, we are the one still make choices.

I've been shopping at Trader Joes for over 11 years. When I buy Trader Joes flowers they are beautiful, inexpensive, and they last way longer than any others I have bought. I ask my husband to buy them only from there!

I have read all the comments about TJ's opening in new locations and am jealous! I live in Maine and we do not have a store. I visit my kids in CT and do my TJ shopping in Westport, pack it in a cooler and hope it travels well. I have written the company at least 3 times about the possibility (I've heard rumors) of a store here in Portland but NO RESPONSE. Needless to say I am disappointed with their communication & manners! Does anyone know how to get the inside scoop? Thanks. Kyle

I like your information I was looking information like that but I find it today and I feel very happy.

I recently purchased two beautiful begonias at Trader Joes. One red, one pink, each in a small tin pail. Usually, TJ's includes a little plastic notice tag describing the plant. When I got these home, there were none and now I'm wondering what kind of begonias they are so I can care for them properly. Can you tell me?

Graham

Quite frankly you have just lost me and my family as a happy customer of this store.

Why you ask.

Because I have just come from this store after walking in behind a couple of women, one of whom was carrying a small long haired dog. The woman put the dog into the cart. I stopped them and politely asked could you please not put the dog into the food cart. At which point she said that it was a service dog. I said "OK but please don't put it in a food cart" She then flipped me off and continued around the store.
I approached two members of staff and asked them to do something. One went to the back of the store and said that he would get a manager.
The manager came out from the back of the store and went to the aisle where the women were and just looked and then returned to the back. At no point did any member of staff approach the women.
I did see other customers looking at the dog. One customers mouth just dropped.

This was blatantly against the law and I will be reporting this incident to the Department of Health.

Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit,and try not to improve or regulate anybody but myself.

Silk bouquets

It's a good priced flower bouquet. It's the thought that counts really :)
