Tracking Trader Joe's: West Hartford, CT Grand Opening

Storewesthartford On Saturday we stopped by the new West Hartford (Connecticut) Trader Joe's that had opened the day before. They call it a "soft open," since the grand opening is actually on Friday, November 11th. I think they wanted a bit of time to get some practice in before the opening, but the store was packed when we got there. Sorry about the lack of photos, they wouldn't let me take any pictures inside the store.

The West Hartford Trader Joe's is located on I-84 off of exit 40, a few minutes outside of Hartford. When you get off the exit look for Sears and the Corbins Corner Mall (it's across the street from the Westfarms Mall). You can't miss the prominent Trader Joe's sign.

The team was very friendly, and I saw many familiar faces (they "stole" a bunch of people from the Danbury store). While the store was very busy, the lines at the registers were short. The staff knew where everything was and constantly asked, "can I help you?"

Unfortunately, the West Hartford store does not sell alcohol (no Two Buck Chuck!). I've been in the stores that carry wine and beer, and the blue laws in Connecticut drive me crazy.

We bought some fruit, pita bread, hummus, smoked salmon, bread, chips, and juice and had a picnic at Elizabeth Park in Hartford.

PA can beat CT's blue laws. We must buy liquor and wine at state-run outlets staffed by unionized civil servants who only drink Franzia. Until last year, they were all closed on Sunday and Election Day (now a few are open Sunday but I'm never sure which ones). We must buy our 6-packs cold from a bar or deli. For any decent beer selection, however, we have to go to a beverage wholesaler and purchase by the case. Not only is there no 2-buck-chuck - there is no way to order any wine you may have enjoyed if the state doesn't already sell it. I actually drive to New Jersey to buy a wine that is imported by a Pennsylvania company yet not sold in Pennsylvania. Oh, and if you want mixers like grenadine and bitters, you have to go to a supermarket. So there!

Need a store in the East Lyme/Waterford area of CT. Closest one is at least 40 minutes away and it's the only store missing from this area.
