Long Beach Store Opening Nov. 18th

According to this story in the Press-Telegram, Trader Joe's will be opening its third store in Long Beach, California on November 18th:

"We decided to open a third location in Long Beach because the residents have really embraced our store and we felt that it was an ideal fit for us and the community," said Alison Mochizuki, national publicity manager for Trader Joe's. "We are very excited about this opening."

Will anyone be able to attend the opening and get some pictures? I'm going to try to make the November 5th opening of the West Hartford, Connecticut store.

Ah, to have a Trader Joe's opening nearby. When we moved from Santa Cruz to Eureka, CA to pursue a self-employed lifestyle, my husband and I both noticed that we suddenly lost interest in cooking. We couldn't figure out why--we were good enough cooks before. We thought that perhaps we were just worn out from the pressure of our day jobs for so many years. But suddenly, the chore of deciding what to eat three times a day was too much for us, and we began to subsist on take-out burritos and deli sandwiches.

Then I stopped into a Trader Joe's when I was out of town once, and I realized: this is why we don't cook anymore! No Trader Joe's! Seriously, I had failed to appreciate how easy it had been to cook regular, healthy, interesting meals with food from Trader Joe's.

As you know, their website does not have an e-mail address and I have not gotten around to mailing them a letter, but I will post my plea here. If only a Trader Joe's would open in the Eureka/Arcata area. They'd do so well here. Sure, we have our natural food stores, but they are expensive and don't have the variety that Trader Joe's has.

Here's how strong the desire for a Trader Joe's is here: one of the perennial small-town rumors that circulate anytime a building is being renovated or constructed, or anytime a plot of land is being cleared for development, is--"You know what I heard? They're going to put in a Trader Joe's there!"

Alas, they are only rumors...

The first Washington DC TJs will be at the The Columbia (2425 L Street, NW). There are others in Maryland and Virginia, but none in DC proper. It was planned to be open in spring of 2006, but I don't know if the schedule has changed. It will be 11,800 sq. ft. This is in Foggy Bottom, near Georgetown, a quite expensive neighborhood - a big departure from the traditional location - but should do quite well, as there are few grocery stores there, and a lot of new residential building. I wrote to TJs suggesting that they consider a development currently in the planning stages in my neighborhood, and they wrote back saying that they are going to wait until they see how the Columbia location does before considering any other DC locations.

Trader Joe's is open in DC!

Visited the TJ's in DC that just opened near 25th & Pennsylvania Ave. The store was packed with people! Also, it seemed as if most of the people walked to the store as there were only half a dozen cars in the parking garage. This looks like a good sign for success and also speaks to the need for more grocery stores in urban locations. A few things were either already sold out or had not yet arrived. Otherwise there was the normal selection of TJ merchandise. Finally, they are using a bank teller line approach for the checkout, i.e. everyone is in one line then proceeds to the next open cashier. I'll be watching to see how this works.
