Forbes is reporting that Trader Joe's competitor Whole Foods is opening their first store in the U.K.
I wonder how long it will be before Trader Joe's starts opening stores in Europe since they are owned by the German-based Aldi.

This is pretty interesting news - Whole Foods already owns a small UK organic chain called Fresh and Wild, so I wonder if F&W will be rebranded?
I think this blog is a great idea - even though I have never set foot in a Trader Joe in my life. I write for 173 Drury Lane - a blog about - but not affiliated with - UK supermarket Sainsbury's.

ok you're an idiot. i thought this would be interesting because i like TJ's. but TJ's is NOT a "competitor" with whole foods. they are of a completely different ilk. as someone who claims to like studying companies, how could you get such a basic thing so wrong? but hey, have a great time with your dopey misinformed blog, and thanks for saving me from wasting my time reading any further

Fluff,
I work in New York City and spend quite a bit of time at Whole Foods (there are two near my office). While they are not direct competitors, they do have similar product lines (organic, prepared foods, etc).
Trader Joe's in Union Square will be located near Whole Foods, and it will be interesting to observe if people visit both stores.
With an attitude like this, I can honestly say that you won't be missed.

Hmm, Why do they always open new stores in Kensington, its so dull and lifeless over there.
I look forward to the idea of Whole foods and Trader Joes opening here, simply because our supermarkets need a rocket up there collective asses. I just wish american companys would look east of Marble Arch, like near my house...on Bishopsgate!

Is Trader Joe's opening in Australia? Has anyone looked in to that market? I'm in Perth but San Diego resident looking for healthy food is a needle in a hay stack!

I work as a captain for TJs and sadly an international TJs will never happen. TJs is all about great food for great prices and if we went international wed have to raise them.

we need TJs in germany. i really can't believe that it is owned by Aldi. Aldi is the worst supermarket ever - all processed foods.

I love TJ's. Every time i go to the US, I have to load up my empty suitcases with TJ stuff. I agree whole foods and TJ's are two totally different entities. I lived in SF where i was closer to wF than to TJ, but i would drive a few miles to tj for my supplies. And i have been to Aldi also in France - just out of curiosity - to see if it was like TJ's. I couldn't recognize anything they have there. i sort of give up hope on having TJ's here in the UK, so i'm thinking of setting up a web based store to sell similar products that i love. look out for Trader Mii in the near future.

I'd love to set up a TJ's here in Canada. Vancouver BC is close to existing stores. The market could bear some price increases due to tariffs. ALDI's serves such a different demographic in Germany- don't the Germans want a TJ's of their own? Why don't the Albrechts franchise and let TJ's expand as the market clearly demands it? Anyone know the answers? alison

I agree with Tim H, we need more of this sort of thing in other parts of London, only I'd like to see it come SOUTH OF THE RIVER for a change! East London, yes, definitely. West and North and Central London already have a plethora of shops catering to health foodies. People in these other demographics tend to be poorer on average, so I suppose that's why. But if good food wasn't so pricey, everyone could partake.

For those of you who are in Australia, I think the issue is that there aren't enough people in the country for the kind of market healty food stores need to survive. In my home town of Seattle we had so many choices but even here in Melbourne organic food shops struggle and I have seen all my local ones change in the last 5 years. For example, I loved Macros Whole Food Market but Woolworth's bought them out and now it has half what it did before. They got rid of the naturopaths and made it more about the produce. The only plus is that Woolworth's stores now sell a range of natural products packaged as Macro Whole Foods. Aldi's does have a range of organic products, and there are tons of farmers markets and small health food shops, they are just quite pricey. I do hope we might someday have a Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Wild Oats, food coop, etc. but for now I suggest shopping at the farmers markets.
